Pre-1500 and Pre-1700 Profiles

Please sign your name Using ~~~~and add if you are certified pre-1500 or pre-1700 or both also list if you have access to any of the paid websites. There are a lot of profiles that fall into these early categories and they are also hard to source out

  1. Rish-15 20:49, 18 April 2018 (UTC) pre-1700/pre-1500
  2. Taylor-25258 12:00, 19 April 2018 (UTC) Pre-1500/pre-1700

Problem Greer Profiles

Add profiles here if you feel that they are problem profiles. This would include profiles that are often connected to wrong families or that Parents, Siblings, Spouses or Children are in dispute about belonging. These may need to fall under Project Protection.

  1. Benjamin Greer b:1740 to William Greer Sr / Mary Ann FITCH
  2. John Greer b:1737 to William Greer Sr / Mary Ann FITCH
  3. James Greer Progenitor, already PPP
  4. Steven Greer He is not listed as a child on the Will of the father, Capt. William Greer ???Which is already in "Research Pending" WARNING
  5. John E. Greer Ezekiel Greer born 1840 is just not listed?? They sure look to be one/same??????????The merge went thru....... but the military muster card for the fold3 27th Missouri Mounted Infantry , John E Greer is now a question??? The time line for the 2 Regiment makes this soldier serving in 2 different Regiments at the same time. Ezekiel Greer born 1840 is just not listed?? but he w/b 10 in 1850?? THEY ARE NOT ONE/SAME so it has to be a different Julia A. GREER, living in Georgetown, MO...which IS also IN PETTIS County. The only way they can be one/same is: He served with both at the same time.... John E. joined the 27th 09/23/1861 and is NOT FOUND after Feb 1862....... the other Ezekiel joined 06/21/61 in Georgetown.. and DIED 12/29/1862
US Civil War| enlisted = 09/23/1861/ = 02/15/1862 When 27th was disbanded/ =Co. H 27th Missouri Volunteer Mounted Infantry  :NOTE: There is NO SOURCE found that proves he died during the WAR... If he did die during his service it would have been from disease.
nps.org  :A John E Greer served with my g-g-grampa Morrison M Lee in 27th MO. Mounted Infantry. :THIS IS IN QUESTION will look later Burial: Hopewell Cemetery, Newland, Pettis County, Missouri  :How can these 2 NOT be one/same, too many coincidences....
The names John Ezekiel/Ezekiel
Both living in Pettis County.
Both have mothers by the name of Julia A Greer
and then Ezekiel Greer being called "aka: John Wasson" that is the last name of the Administrator of his father's estate.
LASTLY, Ezekiel was KIA and then John Ezekiel is NOT FOUND again after he was Discharged from the 27th Missouri Feb 1862.....

John RylandWasson could be the John that paid Ezekiel to go to war for him. Ryland died and is laid to rest where the Greer family is also.

Sourcing Profiles

With so many profiles either unsourced are marked as sourced and are not really sourced, I figured I would post what is actually considered Primary and Secondary Sources as well as how to source. While family trees are a great place for getting info for research they are not considered a source, but rather a research tool. Some trees do contain sources, but you would need to cite the source not the tree. Also things like tombstone, census or passed down history is not proper citing of a source. Things like a tombstone should list where it's located and the information on the tombstone. It's also good to list a date when it was viewed and a picture if available. Census records should have a location and a year, in the least. If you obtain information from a family member it should be cited who the information was given to, who gave the information and a date also the relation to the person you are sourcing would be ideal.

Primary sources are Sources that are taken at or close to the time and place and witnessed by the one telling the account. Birth, Death, Marriage, bible, military and census records are considered primary sources. However try to always find as much supporting evidence as possible. Many cases of people born in the late 1800's and early 1900's were born before Birth certificates were issued and applied later for them. The information was given mostly on word of mouth. Also many people pre 1900 were born, died or married in their homes. Someone would then travel to the Registers office with witnesses or written statements to give account for the official records. You must also remember that in Census records, some people didn't read or write. The census taker would write things as they heard it and spellings can be wrong. People also lied about ages and they also often used nicknames and middle names. Military rolls were often written later. Muster rolls sometimes were written a month or so after the fact. This can get messed up or out of order.

Secondary Sources these are written accounts after the fact. Such as encyclopedias, history books, newspaper and magazine articles, obituaries, index and transcriptions. I also link tombstones in this category because they are often ordered after the death of a individual. While most are correct they can have wrong information especially in times before Birth and death certificates were available to verify the information as correct.

Some records can actually be considered primary and secondary. Example is a death certificate or notice. They contain primary source for death, but the birth information is considered a secondary source.

Just remember that no matter the source, we should fully Vet that source and try to find any information that can back it up.

For those of you who use gedcoms to upload your tree, always go through them. Most of the time gedcoms leave junk info on profiles and often do not properly list sources. Even great gedcoms need a little tlc after you add them.

Task List

  • link profiles of Greers to Name Study
  • adopting and managing profiles that are orphaned
  • connecting unconnected Greer profiles to the One World Tree
  • Sourcing Greer profiles that are unsourced

DNA

You can find others with your surname who have taken DNA tests by going to your surname index this:

YDNA test-takers are the most valuable, but anyone who has taken an autosomal test knows the value of DNA for genealogy and may be able to find a male member of their family who could be tested.

  • comparing test takers on gedmatch to try to pin point where different Greers line up on Chromosomes snp'S for different lines of American Greers.

TEST TAKERS

Shawn Greer on 4 May 2022 (James Greer GunPowder Maryland)
"I see the comment that the American Greer DNA does not match the Greer and Grierson of Scotland. I descend from James Greer of gunpowder maryland. He is my 9th great grand father. Myself, my brother and nephew have been tested. I have been tested at the highest level on familytree DNA. I share DNA matches with Alpin Macgregor the historic Clan Chief and todays Clan Chief Malcolm Macgregor. I am 10 steps from todays chief but we do show up as a match. I have the SNP R-M123 which I believe is older than the M456 that I believe most Macgregors carry today. I also carry the gene R1b-L1335 which is very old. I'm still working on things but I believe we can now say that we come from a very old bloodline."

Greer Sources

If you have a reliable Greer source, add it here. Note family trees are not sources. For those who don't know any of Burkes work, much of his work is being proven wrong. This will not be considered a reliable source for our profiles. If you are using them, please find other reliable sources to back up the Burke Source that isn't derived from his source or delete him as a source.

  1. Cuz' Sue Hosbach's rootsweb TREEs most generally not only have the written out but also gives source down to the page
  2. rootsweb.com RALPH TERRY TREEs (aka: capenoch) is another that gives his sources by name/page # he has even gone over there and searched for the PROOF of our John Greer's parentage, Progenitor...

Any body a Descendant of a Greer born in Germany?
posted 16 Oct 2020 by Carole Taylor   [thank Carole]
We have merged Greer-2687, John Ezekiel Greer, and yet there, I feel, might be 2 John E. Greer's. Anyway, I would like to propose that we do a secondary or just a FREE SPACE to place information/ in this case a document until we can make a profile, if it is proven to be 2 John E. Greer's. Does that make sense?

Does anyone have info on Margaret Brockett Greer parents? I cannot find anything on her parents. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Greer-1004

My wife's GGF is William Avery Greer-1875 from Ashe County, NC. He is seven generations from "Gunpowder" James Greer of Maryland. This includes Big Benjamin Greer of Wilkes County, a member of the Over Mountain Men and husband of Daniel Boone's niece Nancy Ann Wilcoxson. We would like to keep up to date on the family history pre-Gunpowder Greer.

My 2nd great grandfather was Robert Vance Greer-of San Augustine TX-it eventually goes back to and Alexander Greer of Londonderry Ireland.....do I have any distant relatives that know any more?
posted by Ike Stein
Ike, I also descend from Alexander Greer of Ireland, through his son Anderew Greer & Ruth Kincade, their son Joseph Greer & Mary Ann Harmon, their daughter Jane Caroline Greer Smyth and David Radford Smyth, their son Braxton Bragg Smythe Sr and Irene Woodard, their son Braxton Bragg Smythe Jr was my father.

I researched the Harmon's & Greers, and Mary Ann's sister Catherine was married to Joseph's half-brother I think his name was John that might be wrong I don't have my papers out right now, but any way Catharine has a son named John Alexander Greer, he moved to Texas in the 1830-1840's. He was running for Governor of Texas when he died, I believe it was in 1846. I made a trip to Texas a few years ago & saw John Alexanders Grave on the hillside close to the capitol. He had been moved there after first being buried on his land near San Augustine. I went to San Augustine but could not find the Greer land there. I was probably pretty close but the only graveyard I could find was for the blacks. My great grandmother Jane Caroline Greer Smythe was a double 1st cousin to John Alexander Greer. Jane Smythe Parks

OK y'all, we have knew sub-categories. These will place each profile in its own list according to country of origin. Currently there are sub categories for the United States, England, Ireland and Scotland. If your country of Origin is not listed let me know and I can create it. I will go through and add sub category to the profilesaid we have already done.

We may need to look into PPP Capt. William Greer. We can list here any children we can't prove were his and wife's under problem profiles like Carole did for Steven, then remove the parental links. We will have the profiles listed here so we can easily link them back if we can prove the connection.

I have added some new categories to our project page. PRE-1500 AND PRE-1700 please sign your name and list if you are either of these certified also if you have access to the paid websites like, Scotlandspeople, Ancestry and so on. These profile are hard to source and we may need help.

PROBLEM GREER PROFILES please list profile link to any profiles that are under dispute. We may need to PPP them or watch them closer. GREER SOURCES Let's start a list of reliable Greer sources. This can be used for the rest of us to help add reliable sources to Greer profiles. Do not list Trees please.
